Mango Pachadi | மாங்காய் பச்சடி
Pachadi (Telugu: పచ్చడి, Kannada: ಪಚಡಿ Tamil: பச்சடி, Malayalam: പച്ചടി) refers to a traditional South Indian fresh pickle served as a side dish. In Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, pachadi is a side dish curry similar to the North Indian raita, and is made with vegetable, yogurt, coconut, ginger and curry leaves and seasoned with mustard. Pachadi generally is a mildly spiced coconut and yogurt-based dish made with seasonal vegetables or fruits. It is made of fresh vegetables and is served as an accompaniment for rice and for tiffins like idli, dosa, and pesarattu. Many kinds of vegetables are included. Mango pachadi / Mango relish / மாங்காய் பச்சடி is a delicious and traditional sweet prepared on the Tamil New Year Day.
This Pachadi / relish is packed with six tastes of food ( Arusuvai) Sweet (Iṉippu), Salt (Uppu), Bitter (Kasappu) , Sour (Pulippu), Pungent / Spice(Urappu) and Astringent(thuvarpu). Significance of this is to make us understand that life is a combination of mixed emotions like good, bad, happy, sorrow, victory and defeat and we have to face them equally. Jaggery for sweet, salt for salty, red chilli flakes for spice / pungent, neem flower for bitter, Raw Mango for sour, Mustard for astringent .
