Madgane also known as kheer Chana dal or chana dal payasam is a very delicious and popular konkani traditional dessert. Its a traditional style lentil based desserts/ goan dessert made of Bengal gram dal / Channa dal and jaggery with the richness of Coconut milk, and cardamom . This is traditional dessert prepared on almost all festival and can best be described as "payasa" of sorts.   • 2 cup Bengal Garma Dal
  • 1/2 cup Jaggery Powder
  • 1/4 tsp Thick Coconut Milk
  • 1 tbsp Coconut Oil
  • 1 tbsp Slivered Almonds
  • 1 tbsp Cashew nuts
  • 1 tbsp Raisins
  • 2 tbsp Grated Coconut
  • 1/4 tsp Cardamom Powder

*Tips for preparing and serving Madgane* 1. When you are adding jaggery it is very important that you stir it continuously while bringing it to boil. 2. Vary the amount of jaggery / brown sugar depending on how sweet you like to have it. 3. This dessert thickens once it cool downs. you can add little water and bring to boil just before serving as this tastes the best when served hot. 4. If jaggery is not available you can use brown sugar and for vegan and gluten free Madgane version just add the roasted dry fruits instead of sauteing dry fruits in butter / ghee. *Health benefits of Madgane* 1. Coconuts are highly nutritious they contain protein and several important minerals especially high in manganese, which is essential for bone health. 2. Coconut is low in carbs and high in fiber and fat, so it may help stabilize your blood sugar. 3.Chana dal has high amount of potassium and low amount of sodium which makes it very effective in regulating blood pressure.
